JODI BIEBER
Photographer
Jodi Bieber's passion and concerns lie with her birth country, South Africa. Her practice engages with the political, societal and economic circumstances of our times, and her life experiences have shaped her photographic choices. Central themes deal with contemporary issues of gender, politics and identity, often contradicting the mainstream media narrative.
A graduate of the Market Photo Workshop in Johannesburg, Jodi began her career photographing South Africa's 1994 democratic elections for The Star. She has since won ten World Press Photo awards and a first place at Picture of the Year International, and in 2010 took the World Press Photo of the Year for her portrait of Bibi Aisha - an image that appeared on the cover of TIME Magazine and which the New York Times and CNN later included among the 100 photographs that influenced the decade. In 2018 the Royal Photographic Society named her one of its Hundred Heroines.
Alongside her personal projects, Jodi exhibits in museums and galleries internationally and works on commission for global foundations, institutions and brands. Her five monographs, Between Dogs and Wolves, Soweto, Real Beauty, Between Darkness and Light and Francois, are exhibited in solo and group shows worldwide, and her work is held in collections including the Artur Walther Collection, the François Pinault Collection, the Oppenheimer Collection, the Johannesburg Art Gallery and Iziko Museums. In 2022 her work showed at Howard Greenberg Gallery in New York alongside Diane Arbus, Helen Levitt and Vivian Maier.
She mentors photographers, lectures and teaches workshops internationally.
